ClickBank and the Latest PayPal Refund Policy Changes

Things happen so fast online that sometimes I can just about keep up with them. In case you’ve missed it, PayPal has announced that starting in August of 2010, there are going to be changes made to their refund policy. I actually discussed this in a previous article. However, what I didn’t take into account was ClickBank and how it affects them. Wonder how? Well, keep reading and you’ll find out.
First, I need to clear up some confusion from my previous article. I may have mentioned that the new refund policy will now charge the affiliate or merchant 30 cents plus 2.9% of the sale price. That is an error. It is ONLY 30 cents charge per refund…at least as of now. Who knows what will happen in the future? But for now, it’s only going to cost you an additional 30 cents for every item refunded.
But what does this have to do with ClickBank? Well, it has everything to do with them. In case you’re not aware of this, ClickBank now allows buyers to purchase through their PayPal accounts. So, given that, what do you think happens when one of those PayPal buyers requests a refund? You got it. ClickBank is the one who has to pay PayPal their 30 cents per transaction. Do you think they’re going to eat this cost?
Well, I didn’t think so. But I wanted to make sure. So I contacted my ClickBank representative and asked her. The response I got wasn’t a definite one but she didn’t foresee any changes to their policy regarding refunds, meaning that she didn’t see the cost being passed on to us. Notice the word, foresee. Doesn’t exactly make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Nevertheless, that’s how things stand as of this writing. I have no idea what the future holds for us. I never thought that PayPal would start charging us for refunds, but I guess that was naive of me. After all, it DOES cost them money each time they have to process a transaction. Same for ClickBank. Gee, I’m still not feeling all warm and fuzzy.
Anyway, here’s what you can do to minimize your refunds. Sell products of quality and be up front about things on your sales page. I know, it’s a novel concept for some people, but it works. I can count my monthly refunds on less than one hand. So the extra buck out of my pocket won’t kill me.
